Stewardship:
It is not generally recognised that we receive no direct subsidies from the Government or from the Church Commissioners in London. The Church Commissioners do have a great deal of money, some of which helps towards the cost of the parochial clergy, but much of which is needed for clergy pensions. By the year 2010 all the Church Commissioners money will be needed for pensions alone. In practice, we at St.Peter's need to raise about £90,000 a year to run the church. All that money comes from what the congregation gives through the collection, or from events such as the Summer Fayre. As a church family we need to realise that the cost of running our church is
£110,000 a year and together we need to share out this cost so that the bills can be paid. Many Christians give 10% of their income through the Church for the work of God as a matter of principle. The Church of England suggests that its regular members give at least 5% of their disposable income. We invite all members of our congregation to join our giving scheme and contribute what they can. Taxpayers can Covenant their giving. This involves filling in a form so that for every £1.00 they give us, the tax man returns 33p to us. So for every £500 given in a year, St.Peter's would actually receive £665. As well as money, St.Peter's depends entirely on the congregation for so many of the jobs involved in running the services, Sunday Schools and youth groups, as well as such tasks as looking after the churchyard, doing the flowers and cleaning the church.
